About Chocolate Treasures

A Bit About the Owners

Hi, we’re Summer and Dan. We have lived in Heath Hayes, Staffordshire since 2011.  After multiple redundancies, the passion to become self-sufficient started to grow. Both coming from creative backgrounds, we put our heads together and the concept of Chocolate Treasures was born. After putting together our business plan and prototype products, we were approved by The Princes Trust for a small loan to help get started. Since that point, we have worked our way up from a small unit to two units, then onto our first high street shop, shortly followed by the second!
We welcomed our first child Daisy, in December 2018 and she is very happily, already a very important part of the CT team! In our personal life, we really enjoy doing things ‘All together’ as Daisy says. It can be hard to juggle the demands of business and family, but we always try to make the most of the time we have with each other. Some of our favourite things are little walks in nature, play fighting and being crazy together and Daisy especially loves an occasional trip to the seaside.

What We Do

Explore Our History Here

The Beginning

The idea of Chocolate Treasures first came to light in 2014 but it took a couple of years to really nail the product and get things off the ground. The initial concept was to create a gift that would cater to as many preferences and personalities as possible. We decided to incorporate 925 Sterling Silver jewellery with luxury chocolates to create a gift within a gift. We would hide the jewellery in a small, foil-wrapped pot disguising it as a chocolate! The gift buyer would choose a ring, necklace, or earrings to be hidden and we would always consider any preferences on the colour or style of the jewel.

Back then we were working with a primitive setup, doing most of our work from a long L-shaped table in our spare bedroom at home. We had a production line where we would assemble the poducts and then package them ready for posting, with a small section at the end of the table for computer/admin work. We did our best for as long as we could but struggled to have the space to run every aspect of the business. We were also trying to do all of this whilst Dan was working two jobs. He would get up at around 6am to do a 40-minute commute to a call centre. Then he would have to leave work, most of the time going straight to his next job at a pizza place. He’d swap his shirt and trousers for a cap and t shirt, not finishing work until midnight. This was a very tough point in our lives, and we knew more than anything, we had to make this business work. Giving up was never an option.

Our Reps

Soon after the release of our first product (The Original Box) we were approached by a few sales reps who were interested in selling our chocolates. After mulling it over for a short time, we decided to give it a go, though we didn’t have a clue what to expect from it. We were so surprised to see that they were selling our boxes in large quantities from the get-go. We never doubted the capabilities of the reps, we just couldn’t quite believe that customers were ready and willing to buy what we had made! From this point on, we knew we would need a bigger place to work from, so we started renting a small unit up the road from where we live. This enabled us to immediately expand and create new products and a short time later, we rented a second unit as we were growing so quickly. Things ran relatively smoothly for a time but once we had exceeded 30 reps, we realized that we would need a much better infrastructure in place to continue down that road. We desperately tried to provide them with the things they would need to get started.

We put together starter packs and we were focusing on setting up a new website, one that the reps could have access to, but unfortunately, we hit a brick wall with the website development, and it became very frustrating that we couldn’t provide them with what they needed. Aside from this, there were only three of us running the entire business at this point which meant that the reps were being neglected whilst we were producing the products. It was a vicious cycle and a lesson learned (not to run before you can walk) but ultimately, we had to dial down the rep program and concentrate on building our brand and establishing the business. We don’t regret starting the rep program. We’re grateful that they were willing to embark on an unknown journey, with a brand-new business and we learned a lot from them.

A Change of Plan

During the Summer of 2020, we noticed that a high street shop had become available. We deliberated and really didn’t know if we should take the risk, after all this was at a time when the whole world was in and out of lockdowns and we really didn’t know if our business could survive the long-lasting effects of COVID! The decision was finally made one day, when we looked out of our unit window to see that our street sign (which said ‘Chocolate Treasures Now Open’ with a large arrow painted on it) was pointing in the opposite direction to our unit, and instead, pointed towards the empty high street shop! So, we took the leap and have never looked back!

Shortly after moving in, we realised that we couldn’t accommodate our original concept, jewellery and chocolate, due to space issues. We didn’t want to compromise on the quality of the end product, so we decided to focus solely on the chocolates for a while. (The jewellery is still in the pipeline)! This turned out to be the best decision and due to the immediate popularity amongst the community, we grasped the opportunity to expand into the next shop just 4 months later!

We opened our doors at a time when the future of many small businesses was uncertain. It was a time when most businesses were forced to close through repeated lockdowns. We have never taken for granted how blessed we truly were to have had the opportunity that we did.

What We Offer

Our Product Range

Luxurious Chocolates

In one half of the shop we have a cabinet just bursting with luxury, loose chocolates. You can choose your box size and colour, preferred flavours and even pick which ribbon you would like to finish it off! If it’s not a box you’re after, we also sell our chocolates by weight in a bag.

Rolled Ice-Cream

Have you seen rolled ice cream before? If you have ever visited Thailand, you may well have tried it there, as that is where it is thought to have originated! Otherwise known as ‘Stir-Fried ice cream, this mesmerizing dessert is made using a few simple ingredients and a cold plate. The plates usually sit at around -20 degrees and a lot of elbow grease is required to get the desired rolls! At Chocolate Treasures, we use a locally sourced ice cream mixture and we have refined our menu to include only the best ingredients. To make your ice cream, we pour a premeasured amount of mix onto the cold plate, add in any flavours/ingredients that are needed and crush, fold, prod and bodge, until everything can be smoothed into a big rectangle. Once the cream has frozen, we then use our special scrapers to make several rolls of ice cream. Then we finish the whole thing off with squirty cream, a wafer, syrups and a luxury chocolate!

Bubble Waffles

Our warm, fluffy waffles are a firm favourite with customers and we can see why. Firstly, there’s something quite alluring about the look of a bubble waffle as opposed to a standard one. Maybe it comes from the fascination most people usually have with bubble wrap from a young age (or for the younger generation, pop-its)! it’s just fun (and in this case, yummy)! These waffles are the perfect accompaniment to our ice cream rolls and offer a comforting burst of warmth against the cold nip of the rolls.

Milkshakes

Our milkshakes don’t hold back on flavour and are once again, made with locally sourced, premium quality ingredients. It’s the perfect remedy for a sweet tooth on the go! Any of our ice cream flavours we offer in milkshake form, including vegan and gluten free options.

Iced Fruit Bubble Tea

Bubble tea is a drink like no other. It’s fun, refreshing, and comes in a vast range of flavour combinations. Originally from Taiwan, traditional bubble tea is usually made with black tea, milk and tapioca pearls. However newer, and now more popular flavours are made using fruity, fructose syrups for the base, with popping boba balls mixed in. The boba balls are small, clear and are filled with fruit juice. It’s really no wonder why kids are going crazy for bubble tea! Even as an adult, it is a hugely fun experience to slurp the boba up the straw and wait for them to pop!

Hot Chocolate

There’s hot chocolate and then there’s CT hot chocolate. We make ours using our signature milk chocolate truffles. You can keep it simple or you can add a flavour. You could have Mint, Turkish Delight, or even Baileys! We even offer vegan options too, made with oat based milk. Each hot chocolate is topped with squirty cream and marshmallows (even the vegan ones)!

Fudge

We have an ever-growing range of fudge available, it’s right at your fingertips! Check out all our flavours and look out for new seasonal varieties too. Oh fudge! I almost forgot; you can bag 2 for £5!

Confectionary

Our range of confectionary includes old classics, purse friendly options, bits and bobs for the kiddies and ideal snack as you go options! Have a browse!

Meet the CT Family

Dan

I’m Dan, one of the owners of Chocolate Treasures. I love my job, I love the relationships we’ve come to make with our customers, our staff and the local community! I really enjoy sharing our CT journey with you via our social media platforms! This business isn’t just about making money, it’s about living a lifestyle built around caring for one another and bringing people together. After 3 consecutive redundancies in my previous jobs, I knew it was time to branch out and do something for us! (Me, Summer, and Daisy). And here we are!

It’s been 8 years in the making and there are still so many stones left unturned in this business.

It’s not always plain sailing when you have your own business. Battling with mental health issues, Dyslexia and having a family sure takes its toll but with support from everyone around me I’m very grateful to have what we do.

My advice to anyone… If you have a dream or ambition, then go for it! You have one life, make it count!

Summer

Hi, I’m Summer, creator and co-owner of CT. After facing another redundancy, a while ago, Dan asked me if I could come up with a new business idea. Though the business model was very different back then, Chocolate Treasures was born. To explain what this business means to me would be no easy feat. The truth is, that I didn’t ever think it would be possible for me to be doing what we are now. I didn’t finish school and didn’t sit my exams due to years of anxiety and confidence issues. The way our business has been embraced by our customers and community has acted as the perfect tonic to clear up any doubts or struggles I’ve suffered with previously. When I’m at the shop, you will often find me spraying down the tables, doors and surfaces, which is where I earned my nickname (Jantex Jan) and generally trying to keep the place spic and span! I love to run around behind the scenes making sure all the staff have what they need to operate smoothly and if there is any seasonal décor that needs doing, I’ll be getting stuck into that too! In my spare time I like to read, sing and cook.

Ebony

Hi, I’m Ebony and I help to manage the day to day running of the shop. I’m the chief taste tester for new products and I’m also the ribbon/bow perfectionist! I love getting creative with product presentation and shop décor and in my spare time, I enjoy baking cakes and tending to my many, many plants! I’m the one who deals with all things wedding/party favours, and I really try to work with people to make their visions and colour schemes come to life. I really value the friendships we have made in our community and beyond since we’ve been here.

Angel

Hi, I’m Angel. I moved from Aylesbury (Buckinghamshire) to work with my Aunties and Uncle. I started my job as an apprentice in 2021 and since then, I’ve enjoyed making friends with my other team members and lots of our customers too! I’ve gained a lot of confidence and independence since starting this job and I love meeting all the new people who visit our shop every day. I also enjoy travelling back to Buckinghamshire as often as I can to visit my family. I’m extremely clumsy (so they say), I have a wacky fashion sense, I’m a real foodie, and I love running and singing in my spare time. I’ll usually be on the ice cream side of the shop, and I love seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces when they see their ice creams come to life! (I’ll even pop an extra chocolate on the top sometimes, when the bosses aren’t looking. Shhh)!

Favourite thing from CT: I love the ice cups!

Ellie

Hi, I’m Ellie. I came into CT as an apprentice in August 2021. When I first started, I was quite anxious and a lot quieter. Since then, I’ve become much louder and more confident, and I love having a laugh and joke with our customers. I’m usually on the ice cream side of the shop where I love getting creative with new flavours. I even created our signature Chocoholic milkshake! I’ve learned to have a lot more patience and understanding in this job and our team dynamic at work is like one big family! We’re always having banter and winding each other up! (Especially me and Nigel). In my spare time, I enjoy getting my eyelashes done, going to the gym, and sleeping! I also have a love for cars, particularly Mustangs.

Lewis

Hi, I’m Lewis. I am autistic and I joined Chocolate Treasures as a volunteer in February 2022 after I’d applied for countless jobs elsewhere with no success. But I am now employed with CT as a part time member of the team! When I first joined, I struggled with some of the fiddlier tasks such as ribboning bags and boxes of chocolate, but I am now proud to say that after lots of practice, I can finally tie a bow! You will usually find me working on the chocolate counter and nothing makes me happier than helping and advising customers with their purchases. I have an in-depth knowledge of the flavours we offer in the cabinet and I’m the man for the job if you’re struggling to make a choice. I love listening to a bit of Elton John whilst we’re working, and you’ll quite often see me sporting a snazzy bow tie and boater hat! I really enjoy coming up with new and unusual flavours to experiment with for our hot chocolates!

Rose

Hi, I’m Rose and I’m currently working with CT part time. I’m also studying health and social care at college, but I have a particular interest in psychology. Since starting, I’ve learnt to work well under pressure and I’m always happy to get stuck in. I’m quick to learn and I’m especially good at memorising customer orders. I’m totally born in the wrong decade, I’m a 90’s girl through and through! I love my fake lashes and outside of work, I go to the gym. I love listening to music and will listen to anything and everything.

Daisy

I’m Daisy and I’m the real boss of CT! I’m sassy, energetic and love my CT family! Everyone looks after me at the chocolate shop and they all play with me and keep me safe. I like watching videos on Lewis’ phone, watching Ellie make my ice cream and helping Angel with small tasks. It’s lots of fun having a Momma & Daddy that own a chocolate shop. I get to treat all my nursery friends to treats! I can sometimes do little jobs to help too!

Special Skill: Queen of chaos

Favourite thing from CT: Bubble gum rolled ice cream with Strawberry sauce.

Awards and Accolades

When starting and running a business, there is always so much to be done every single day, which doesn’t leave much room for thinking about awards or any kind of special recognition. Of course, our aim is to always provide the very best services and products we can, but it still always comes as a happy shock when we’re presented with them. Here are some of our awards.

We were able to show him how the loan we had received from The Prince’s Trust was used and how it had benefited the growth of our fledgling business.
